r a d i a l system

Berlin, 2025

A light sign that invites encounters: With a site-specific light installation by internationally renowned light artist Mischa Kuball, the Radialsystem will be permanently visible from a distance for the first time from summer 2025. The lettering “r a d i a l system” will shine as a kinetic light object and mark a new artistic and architectural point of reference on the façade of the building. The work, which will be officially inaugurated and illuminated for the first time on July 25, moves between “art in architecture” and a sensory experience in public space.

Mischa Kuball's installation sees itself as a “body of light with its own temporality”: the frequency and brightness of the individual letters change in subtle movements, reacting to each other and thus creating a dynamic topography of light. It refers to the eventful history of the building: the Radialsystem - a former pumping station directly on the Spree that was put into operation at the end of the 19th century - has been combining transformation and continuity as a cultural venue in dialog with international and local artists, ensembles and audiences for almost twenty years. In the spirit of Mischa Kuball's artistic practice, in which light serves as a medium for social discourse and aesthetic intervention, the installation also sees itself as a visual practice of communication - open, in motion and in relation to one another.

The inauguration will take place as part of the second performance of STEIN on July 25, 2025. The new choreography by Lucinda Childs, Hans Peter Kuhn and Miki Orihara with the Dance On Ensemble celebrates its world premiere the evening before and can be seen on a total of four summer evenings at the Radialsystem.
