Symposium at Baukunstarchiv NRW: Between Art and Monument

Friday, 2026/3/6, 4 - 8 pm | Baukunstarchiv NRW, Dortmund /DE

While dealing with existing artworks and monuments poses growing challenges for local authorities, new approaches to solving these problems often emerge in temporary and participatory projects. These processes, which are driven by local initiatives, are shifting the concept of monuments toward collective, open, and process-oriented forms of remembrance.

The symposium “Between Art and Monument” at the Baukunstarchiv NRW in Dortmund addresses these developments in the context of the current exhibition under construction / public preposition by Mischa Kuball. Experts from the fields of art, science, and curatorial practice discuss how the boundaries between artwork, monument, and built space are shifting and what impulses contemporary artistic and architectural approaches could provide for future forms of remembrance.
