Mischa Kuball at Museum Casa di Goethe in Rome

Opening: Wednesday, 2026/04/29, 7 pm I Casa di Goethe, Rome /ITA

From April 30 to October 4, 2026, the Casa di Goethe Museum in Rome will present the solo exhibition Newton/Goethe/Galileo.

In two series of works, Mischa Kuball explores two significant events in the history of science: A work developed specifically for the Casa di Goethe—luce nera (2026)—visually juxtaposes the contrasting views of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Isaac Newton on color theory and the refraction of light in an open, contemporary dialogue. The installation five suns–after Galileo (2018) addresses Galileo Galilei’s observations of sunspots, which led to a conflict with the Catholic Church in the early 17th century.

The exhibition explores fundamental questions of light, color, and perception at the intersection of art and science. The starting point is the historical discourse between Goethe and Newton, which contrasts different conceptions of color as a physical phenomenon versus one tied to perception.
